folk fest finds

ok ... for instance ... here are a couple of those magical finds at folk festivals ...

west virginia raised mollie o'brien is a gem discovered at winnipeg folk fest a few years back ... for me there is just something true and pure about her voice ...

'big red sun' is my favourite recording of hers ...

and at last year's brandon folk festival we discovered and were treated to the very cool voice, storytelling canadian musician scott cook ...

take a listen to his fish jumpin song off of his latest release ...

enjoy enjoy ... and please, if you have any artists that have tugged at your strings, do share!

Deep, soulful voice. She reminds me of the tradition of female singer-songwriters in the 70's.

A good discovery, her singing must have been mesmerising live.

I do enjoy some folk music, but I've never been to a festival. I think I'm more of a jazz kinda girl. Mollie O'Brien sounds, great! If I saw her in the grocery store, I'd never guess she had such a voice! Thanks for sharing.

Duke Ellington said, "There are only two kinds of music: the good kind and the bad kind." PJ says "Me likey the good kind." I like Maura O'Connell, Alison Krauss (contemporary artists good for consistent heartstring tugging), but I tend to like songs as opposed to artists, older stuff as opposed to new. CSNY's "Lady of the Isle" one of my favorite all time.

hi clarity ~
you are so right about seeing mollie live ... the video doesn't seem nearly as riveting as watching her live on a stage just feet away with the sun shining down and the trees swaying in the breeze ... her recording takes me back for sure ... thanks for commenting!

isn't that truth? you never know what treasures and gifts people possess when you meet them by chance ... just makes you want to hug them all! oh! and for the jazz girl in you, i will be posting something shortly about a festival of another 'note' in the next while ... thanks always ...

oh pj ~
i can't tell you how thrilled i was to be introduced to maura o'connell ... thank you thank you! and wouldn't you know it? one of the youtube videos, she is performing with nanci griffith whom i have loved for years ... 'once in a very blue moon' warms me through ... and alison krauss has such a sweet, almost whispery quality that draws you closer ~ thanks! ah yes, CSNY ... very dear to us ... my husband bought me tickets to see them in winnipeg a couple of years ago ... and of course i cried lots ... especially 'our house' ... thanks for commenting ... thanks for sharing!

oh! have you listened to iris dement? o m g ... love her, too!
