a lot of good

i've been thinking ... thanks to knack and kim ... and my mom.

you see, growing up, my mom always taught us kids to always put garbage in the garbage and never leave it on the ground. she would say ... 'imagine if every person put a wrapper on the ground ... the ground would be covered in wrappers ... and it wouldn't be a very nice place to live, would it?'

i very much took this to heart ... and having the imagination i do, really really didn't want a world like that.

i have taught my children the same ... and being boys, i would tell them to put it in their pocket, if there wasn't a garbage can near by. over the years, i have not minded in the least of unloading pockets filled with bits, as i know they aren't mindlessly letting it fall ... sigh.

but i have also thought through the years that my mom's message applies to many other aspects of life.

like, if i smile at every person i meet ... maybe they will smile at more people ... and maybe the world will be brighter with more smiles!

it sure doesn't hurt to try ...

i don't suppose my mom had ever heard of 'pay it forward' ~ the simple act of doing good or giving to someone after someone else has done something good for you. to me, it's a natural way of being ... but in today's world, we are gently being nudged to recreate this act in a more conscious way ... and it's all good.

our sons attend a high school that is a 'pay it forward' school. i am so grateful these impressionable minds are being taught and are having this goodness instilled into their lives.

and that takes me back to knack and kim! they (and hopefully many more!) have posted about movements that are working to instill more goodness in our world ... take a look, if you can ... there's a lot of good going on ...

in particular, i share with you, this clip about some canadian boys and their extreme kindness ... (you may want a tissue ...)

mom ~ you're right about the wrappers ~ the little things we do will help do a world of good ... thank you ~
